RONALD CUP FINAL

HOOKHILLS UNITED 0  STOKE FLEMING 2

“With both teams being Division Three promotion rivals, this was always going to be a tight match and so it proved to be. Had Hookhills made the most of their chances, particularly in the first half, then the result may have been very different.

Stoke Fleming swept forward from the start and took the lead as early as the sixth minute. Following a scramble in the six-yard box from Gary Aldous's corner, Marcus Copeman was on hand to the nod the ball home from point-blank range. This seemed to spark United into life and, for the next thirty minutes or so, they took control largely through the graft of John Young. Roving almost everywhere on the pitch, Young drove his colleagues forward and was to see his tenth minute header tipped over by Karl Samuel in Stoke's goal. This was followed by another Young effort being pushed around the post by Samuel. In the fourteenth minute Samuel sliced down Carl Bradley, leaving the striker needing extensive treatment for an injury that led to his eventual substitution. Samuel was relieved to only see a yellow card, the ball going obviously wide of goal. Ross Bradley stepped up to take the resulting penalty but fired wide of the mark, to the relief of Stoke Fleming. Hookhills continued to press forward but were unfortunate to see a number of chances saved or just wide of goal. The closing minutes of the half was to be in Stoke Fleming's favour, as they started to regain control.

The first fifteen minutes, of the second half, belonged to Hookhills with Young's in-swinging corner just tipped away. A major factor throughout the match was United's set pieces causing Stoke's defence some problems. Geoff Morris dealt with much of these and his display (coupled with his distribution, was to earn him the man of the match award. Hookhills continued to dominate going forward and the loss of Young, through injury with about fifteen minutes to go, dealt them a cruel blow. The remaining ten men were gradually driven back and then hit with a sucker punch in the 84th minute. Four passes from defence to attack led to Sam Bruckner being fed in the penalty area, the youngster driving the ball across goal and in at the far post. A great goal to end a very entertaining match but a heart-breaker for Hookhills who will now look to outdo their rivals in the promotion stakes”.
