Babbacombe Corinthians 1  Denbury Athletic 3

"Denbury Athletic won through the first leg of their league and cup ambitions
but the outcome might have been so different if their 'keeper, Tony Creber,
had not made a telling save in the opening minute. Diving to his left the big
custodian turned away a goal-bound shot superbly and his team were to build
from that.

Both teams looked dangerous in the opening rounds, with Corries taking the
more direct approach and Athletic using their flanks well. Denbury's took the
lead, in the 18th minute, when Matt Guy hammered home a penalty given for
handball. For a time Babbacombe were forced onto the back foot, some last
ditch tackles saving their bacon, Guy firing a free-kick just wide and Graham
Mabin's header just clearing Corries' crossbar. Creber again made a fine
save, just after the half-hour mark, pushing away Dan Whittington's fierce
drive. Minutes before the break, Corinthians' Hedley Crossman-Emms was denied
an equaliser by James Currell's headed clearance off the goal-line.

Just four minutes into the second half, Currell set up Jamie Felton, the
youngster finishing neatly and giving Denbury breathing space. Six minutes
later, Denbury skipper Pete Heywood scored to set the seal on the match.
Corries refused to lie down though, Bowser and Whittington all going close
before Hedley Crossman-Emms chipped the ball over Creber to set up a frantic
last ten minutes. The comeback wasn't to be and Athletic saw out the
remaining time safely".
