IVOR ANDREWS CUP FINAL
BUCKFASTLEIGH RANGERS RES 0 BOVEY TRACEY 3RDS 3
"Having had to wait since this final was rain-delayed, a crowd of some 200 visited Ipplepen Athletic's ground and were treated to some decent football played on a very hard surface. Both clubs fielded a lot of youngsters that were well supported by some more experienced heads and the tightness of the game reflected this.
"Bovey Tracey enjoyed much of the first half possession but were kept at bay by some fine defending. A second minute chance for Steve Vaughan was well blocked by Rangers 'keeper Tim Mason and other opportunities were sent wide. Bovey were quick to send the ball forward but often guilty of over-hitting their passes. A well marshalled back line caught Rangers' forwards offside, as they fought to play the ball forward on the ground. It took 38 minutes to break the deadlock and a well placed set-piece to lead to the goal. Josh Armstrong hit a good corner into the box and, admidst the mayhem, Bovey skipper Paul Gimson bundled home the ball from close range. Affectionately know as 'the camel', Gimson had bagged his thirteenth goal in seventeen matches, all from centre-half! Bovey had made the pressure count and Rangers' half-time regrouping needed to concentrate on better forward play.
"The second half saw Bovey continue to press, although Rangers were to gradually force their way into the match. Nigel Stevens was often able to boss the middle of the park and much of Buckfastleigh's play was to come from him. Martin Potter was also proving to be a thorn in Bovey Tracey's side and the midfielder was unlucky to see a couple of good efforts dealt with comfortably. The killer goals were to come just before the hour mark and within seconds of each other. Ben Thorne sent over a long cross-field ball which collected and finsihed off well by Dave Steer. Buckfastleigh were still trying to recover when Thorne himself delivered the death-blow, nodding in from close range after Mitchell's ball into the area was not dealt with. Rangers didn't look capable of climbing what was now looking like a mountain but continued to drive themselves into the fray. A couple of well hit free-kicks went just wide and it took some tough tackling for Bovey to keep their lead.
"At the end there were some very tired legs but both clubs had shown what strength they have in their junior teams. Both should enjoy more success next season".
