GEORGE BELLI CUP FINAL
GU & TG Reserves 1  Ashburton AFC 4

"Although the score-line may indicate differently, this was a much more evenly
contested game at the Western Counties roofing Ground, Bovey Tracey. Both
sides gave their all but Ashburton were to make their chances in front of
goal count.

"As early as the third minute the Ashes were ahead. Luke Chapple's free-kick,
from the left edge of Gents penalty area, looked more like a cross but the
ball eluded everyone to enter at the top far corner of the net. Far from
dwelling on the early blow, Gents came storming back and dominated the next
dozen minutes or so. Ashburton 'keeper, Andy Shorland, saved well from Steve
Parkin's eighth minute free-kick and dealt as well with Shaun Ripley's shot a
minute later. Gary Hodge then fired a shot over Ashburton's goal after
collecting Jon Glasser's neat pass. Just when they thought they were getting
on top, Gents suffered another blow when Ashes main striker was felled in the
box. Billy Ashton stepped up to the mark and blasted the resultant penalty
into the roof of the net. Galmpton were tottering a little now and Ashburton
enjoyed much more of the play. Dan Steer had a shot well saved by Gents
custodian Ben Pitocco and within minutes the youngster was saving from Luke
Chapple and Dan Grute. Weathering the storm, Gents fought back and were duly
rewarded when Paul Mayer's free-kick caused havoc in the Ashes area and Shaun
Ripley eventually stabbed the ball home to reduce the arrears. The game swung
back in Gents' favour but their shooting was rather wayward or dealt with by
Shorland and his defence.

"Galmpton continued to hold the upper hand for the early stages of the second
half but, again, failed to capitalise with their final pass or shot. Mid-way
through the half Ashburton were regaining control and took advantage of
Gents' pressing forward to score a break-away goal. Grute sent Steer clean
through and the forward sidestepped Pitocco to roll the ball home. Galmpton
refused to give up and, with James Ledgerwood-Barr at the heart of most
things, they used their right flanks well but still without the finishing
touch. With about eight minutes to go they saw a goal disallowed although it
wasn't entirely clear why, Mayer and Ripley both then firing wide if the
mark. Time was running out as Steer came up with his second and Ashburtons'
fourth goal. Andy Steward's quick free-kick sent man-of-the-match Steer
through to chip the ball over the advancing Pitocco and tap it into an empty
net.

"Life-long South Devon football stalwart, Mike Stumbles, presented the MoM
trophy and match sponsor Peter Passmore of Manor Building the George Belli
Cup and medals. The game was well marshalled by referee Barry Wilson and his
team and well hosted by the staff off Bovey Tracey".
